Mangroves—World Premiere 2009

Mangroves is the artistic creation of internationally known choreographer Josée Garant, whose choreography for Josee Garant Dance is an inspired and imaginative interpretation in contemporary dance of South Florida’s natural environment.

Mangroves is a sensual reflective physical design that takes us on a nonstop journey of connected movement and music that reflects the intricate and complex intertwining and mysterious life of the mangrove from its beginning as a plant seedling to fully developed community.

Mangroves is a collaboration featuring original music by internationally known composer Harold Meltzer, co-artistic director of New York’s New Music Series, Sequitur. Mangroves is the first in a five part series Elemental Journey; Air, Land, Water with the complete work to be premiered by Josee Garant Dance in February 2012 in Miami.

Mangroves premiered to an enthusiastic reception at the Miami Dance Festival at the Byron Carlyle Theatre, Miami Beach, FL, in May 2009. The performance by 6 dancers was accompanied by live music featuring guitarist William Anderson of New York, NY.

A DVD and photographs of the performance are available and represent the artistic creativity and performances that will inspire during the full production of Elemental Journey; Air, Land, Water.

Mangroves was made possible through the 2008-2009 Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs Choreographer Fellowship Award.
